Miracle Worker: Control Algae in Your Garden Pond With an Ultra Violet Light

If you want your pond water to be crystal clear, use a good quality UV light in addition to your biofilter. The ultra-violet light works to remove algae in your garden pond, which in turn removes the unsightly green appearance that many ponds develop over time.

Bear in mind that the size of your pond, the amount of koi and other fish that you stock, the warmer the water and the amount of sunlight will affect the size of the UV light needed to clear a pond.  As you increase any of these variables, you will need a larger light to achieve the desired result.

A garden pond is a perfect breeding ground for algae, especially if you live in a warm climate, you keep lots of fish, and your pond gets lots of sunshine. These normally-green plants multiply at the rate of 30 times per hour under these conditions, and your pond will become green very quickly as a result.

Keep in mind that your biofilter will have no effect on the pea-soup appearance of your pond water. Biofilters only work to remove the toxic chemicals from your pond water, they have no affect on the water's appearance. Your best bet is to use a UV filter in conjunction with your biofilter, that way your pond water will be healthy and crystal clear.

There are a variety of UV lights available for this purpose both here in the US and elsewhere. UVC or UV lights are both common terms for these lights. But don't confuse a UV clarifier with a UV sterilizer, which is used in the food industry and will not work in a garden pond application.

Another caution: UV lights can be damaging to your eyes. NEVER look directly into a UV light.
